Plymouth State University English Department
Books. Films. Newspapers. New Media. We are in the culture business.
The English department at Plymouth State University provides a wealth of intellectual, professional, and creative opportunities for students, all within a personal, friendly, and social atmosphere.
Students majoring in English can specialize in Literature & Film, Writing, and Teacher Certification, and we also offer several minors ranging from Expository Writing, Imaginative Writing, Film, and Literature.
Our small classes provide an intimate learning environment where everyone knows your name. Students and faculty work closely together to develop students’ professional and creative skills so that they become strong competitors in today’s job market and in graduate programs across the region.
Beyond the classroom, the department offers several student organizations that help build the reading and writing community we value so highly. Our most outstanding students are invited to participate in our chapter of the international English honor’s society, Sigma Tau Delta; our mentoring organization, MESA (Mentoring Enhances Student Achievement) offers tutoring both on campus and as community outreach at the Pemi Youth Center. As early as their first year, students may publish weekly articles in the campus newspaper, The Clock. Through Poets & Writers, our students regularly perform their work at open mics in the community and then have the opportunity to publish that work in a literary journal like Centripetal—students interested in a publishing career can even gain experience in both literary and newspaper editing! So if you like English—and, since you’re reading this semester’s issue of Centripetal, we know you do!—consider becoming an English major at Plymouth State University. Come see what the fuss is all about.
